Frequently Asked Questions

CrossFit combines the best parts of weightlifting, sprinting, calisthenics, and kettlebells.  Plus, we do a little bit of basic gymnastics.  By sticking to the most effective exercises from each, we can do these really efficient workouts in about 30 minutes.  They’re hard, but they have to be.  It takes a couple of years to be really great at CrossFit, but you can be good in a few months.

What’s the WOD?

Workout Of the Day. Most of our members do CrossFit, and that’s part of the language.

We start with a small warmup challenge.  For instance, a few rowing intervals, or some mobility drills.  Easy stuff.  Then we move into skill development: one day, we’ll spend perfecting your squat; another, we’ll work on your split jerk; another, we’ll teach you to do a handstand (yes, you can.) The ‘meat and potatoes’ of the group, though, is the main WOD, or challenge.  You’ll start as a group; the resulting atmosphere is enthusiastic co-support.

One of the great things about CrossFit is that the training can be “scaled” to suit everyone, regardless of their skill or fitness level. Scaling means that the same workout can be adjusted for different individuals by keeping the same format but substituting different exercises, changing the intensity, reducing or increasing the volume (number of reps or rounds), or changing the amount of rest.

CrossFit is for everyone, not just elite athletes that already know how to do Olympic lifting. We say that a lot because it is an important message. Olympic lifts are an important part of CrossFit because they are highly functional complex movements that produce a fantastic training effect. The lifts are safe providing that they are taught and learnt in a progressive and scaled manner, so that the technique is drilled and understood prior to adding any weight. For beginners we use broomsticks as a substitute for the bar, and only once correct form is consistently demonstrated do we start scaling the weight. This is an effective and safe way to learn O’lifting. If you have never done weightlifting before that is OK. We simply scale the CrossFit workout for you and substitute alternative exercises using broomsticks and dumbells.

No, unlike bodybuilders, who train in a more isolated, specific way, we train using functional movements. That is, movements that your body was designed to do. This is the most effective way to build strength, burn fat, and increase cardio capacity. ( and we add in the fun for even extra smiles!)

CrossFit is more expensive than regular fitness because of what is included in the price. Basic fitness basically rents out the facilities and the equipment.

At Red City CrossFit you get: guidance, coached classes, program, motivation, goal and result oriented training, limited groups, personal approach: we know our members strengths, weaknesses, limitations and successes. On top of that, we have an amazing, supportive, warm and friendly community.

Goal of a regular fitness is to have as many people as possible to sign up for a long term membership, and hope that most won’t come (otherwise place would be constantly packed).

Our goal is to keep members as engaged as possible, so when we notice your absence, you will get a message or a call, to see if everything is allright.

We will gladly pause your membership for a period of min. 14 to max. 60 days.

It’s always great to have CrossFit people from all over the world visit us. We are happy to welcome you to Antwerp and to our Red City CrossFit.

You have to have the basic movements down (Squats, Presses & Pulls), are regularly following the WODs online, or train for at least 6 months at another CrossFit facility. You don’t have any injuries or health issues that need special attention.

II Just show up whenever you like and hope there is still a free spot in the class.

We need to focus on our regular clients. If you come in without a booking for a class or other appointment, we will see what we can do. But we can’t guarantee  you a free spot, so we advise you to Contact Us first.

  • Single Drop-In: 20 Euro 

We have a very multinational community, including expats and students from all over the world. To stay inclusive, we keep communication in English. All our coaches are perfectly bi-, and even tri-lingual, so we don’t expect any language barriers to be an issue.

If the class is full, you can still sign up on the waiting list. Most of the time, spots become available before the class starts, so you can still sign up and join WOD.
